For a private buyer, FCR (final return of Tunisians living abroad) is today the only way to bring a car into Tunisia. Here are the rules in force and what they cost.
You pay 25% of duties and taxes (30% above 2000 cc for petrol or hybrid, 2500 cc for diesel). Normal TU plates, the car can be resold.
You pay nothing. RS plates: the car cannot be sold and only the family drives it.
FCR taxes are paid with foreign currency exchanged in Tunisia or from a foreign-currency (convertible) account.
As a percentage of the car's customs value, for a private buyer, new or used.
| Engine size | Taxes without FCR | FCR taxes |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1300 cc | 104% | 26% |
| 1300 to 1500 cc | 173% | 43% |
| 1500 to 1700 cc | 212% | 53% |
| 1700 to 2000 cc | 281% | 70% |
| 2000 to 3000 cc (30% share) | 326% | 98% |
Tarif douanier 2026 (Tarif Web), private buyer: consumption duty + 19% VAT + 3% RPD.
Hybrid, diesel or electric: estimate on request.
Customs tax their own reference value (make, model, engine, year), not your invoice. That is why our car pages give a range: an estimate, not a guaranteed amount.
